European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a €200 million Global Gateway Partnership Package during a September 7 visit to Nuuk. The EU, Greenland and Denmark also signed a new Joint Declaration expanding cooperation across investment, political dialogue and people-to-people exchanges.

The package covers satellite and cable connectivity, hydropower, critical raw materials, housing, sustainable tourism and support for small businesses. The package is to be invested in and with Greenland during 2026 and 2027.

Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani met Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Beijing on September 7.

Qatar’s foreign ministry said the talks focused on expanding cooperation in the economy, investment, trade, energy and technology, as well as strengthening existing partnerships in other areas of mutual interest. The two sides also discussed regional developments.

China and Mexico discuss strategic partnership, APEC and multilateral coordination

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks in Beijing on September 7 with Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs Roberto Velasco Álvarez. China said the discussions addressed high-level exchanges, political trust and the continued development of the China-Mexico comprehensive strategic partnership.

Wang linked the relationship to broader Global South coordination and China’s 2026 APEC presidency. The Chinese foreign ministry said Mexico supported China’s hosting of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and that the two countries intended to strengthen coordination in multilateral forums.

Australia opens consultation on major overhaul of autonomous sanctions law

Australia Sanctions framework Public consultation

Australia opened a four-week public consultation on September 7 on an exposure draft of the Autonomous Sanctions Bill 2026. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said the draft contains the most significant elements of the proposed reforms.

The wider reform is intended to modernise Australia’s autonomous sanctions framework. DFAT said work on other elements of the legislative package was continuing in parallel and that further changes could follow public submissions.

UK and U.S. discuss Ukraine ceasefire, Strait of Hormuz and Iran

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump on September 7. According to Downing Street, the two leaders discussed continued work toward a ceasefire in Ukraine and recent U.S.-led peace negotiations.

The British readout said the Middle East discussion covered the two-state solution, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and the UK position that Iran must not acquire a nuclear weapon.

France and South Korea co-chaired the Lumière Summit in Saint-Paul-de-Vence on September 7, bringing together representatives of governments, international organisations, cultural institutions and the film, television and gaming industries.

The Lumière Declaration addresses artificial intelligence, intellectual property, sustainable production and image education, and presents the initiative as the beginning of a wider multilateral framework for cooperation around cinema and the moving image.
