CENTCOM reports strikes on three Iranian crude carriers after missile launches toward U.S. warships
U.S. Central Command said its forces struck three Iranian crude oil carriers on September 5 after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched ballistic missiles toward two U.S. Navy warships patrolling regional waters. CENTCOM said the U.S. aircraft carrier and guided-missile destroyer evaded the attacks and that no American personnel were harmed.
According to CENTCOM, U.S. forces permanently disabled the M/T Downy off Kharg Island and the M/T Stark 1 near Jask, and destroyed the unladen M/T Kylo, also known as Noxen, in the Gulf of Oman after its crew had been directed to abandon ship. CENTCOM described the vessels as part of a network financing the IRGC and regional proxies.

Isar Aerospace reaches orbit from Andøya in European launch milestone
Isar Aerospace’s Spectrum rocket reached orbit from Andøya Space in Norway on September 5. The European Commission said this was the first time a privately developed rocket had reached orbit from continental Europe and described the mission as an important step in advancing Europe’s autonomous access to space.
The qualification mission carried customer payloads and provided operational data for the industrialisation of the Spectrum launcher. The European Commission has supported Isar Aerospace through instruments including the EIC Horizon Prize and programmes intended to expand a competitive European launcher ecosystem.

Japan urges Russia to remove Khabarovsk victory monument
Japan’s Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu issued a message on September 5 regarding a monument unveiled the previous day in Khabarovsk, Russia, commemorating victory over Japan. The monument depicts a Soviet soldier destroying a boundary stone bearing the chrysanthemum crest, a symbol associated with Japan.
Motegi said Japan had strongly requested through diplomatic channels that the Russian side cease the installation and remove the monument. He said Russia had not responded to that request as of September 5 and that Japan would continue to press for its removal.

WHO verifies Thailand’s elimination of rubella as a public health problem
The World Health Organization announced on September 5 that Thailand had been verified for eliminating rubella as a public health problem. WHO said the verification followed review of surveillance, molecular epidemiology, immunisation coverage, outbreak response and programme performance, together with a field visit in July.
Thailand became the seventh country in the WHO South-East Asia Region to achieve rubella elimination. WHO said verification confirms that the country has met the criteria for interruption of endemic rubella virus transmission and has systems in place to sustain the achievement.
