Milei announces Malvinas sanctions and defence measures

Argentina Sovereignty and national security Presidential address

In his September 3 address, Javier Milei linked Argentina’s claim over the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) and the Sea Lion oil project to national security. He announced faster sanctions procedures, expanded defence resources and proposed legislation covering stronger penalties and a National Security Council.

The announced sanctions measures encompass companies, shareholders, directors and suppliers. Milei also identified an integrated naval base in Tierra del Fuego and telecommunications capacity as defence priorities.

EU Council approves customs reform; Parliament approval remains ahead

European Union Customs reform Council approval

The Council of the European Union approved customs reform assigning importer responsibilities to non-EU e-commerce platforms selling into the bloc. The text provides for an EU Customs Authority in Lille and a common customs data hub.

The Council said European Parliament approval was expected later in September, before signature and official publication. Mandatory use of the data hub is scheduled for July 2028 for e-commerce and March 2034 for all traders.

The OECD published its Investment Policy Framework for Digital Transformation, examining how governments can promote private investment supporting digital infrastructure, services and capabilities.
