India Brings AI and High Performance Computing into Critical Mineral Exploration
Peru’s S/31 million operation against illegal-mining infrastructure and Blackwater’s start of major EP2 construction also activate Signals 08 and 02.
Three developments published on August 4 show mineral strategy moving through discovery capability, territorial control and construction execution. India’s C-DAC and Geological Survey of India signed an agreement linking artificial intelligence and high performance computing to geophysical analysis and predictive mineral targeting. What happened
On August 4, India’s Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and the Geological Survey of India signed an umbrella memorandum of understanding covering geoscience, mineral exploration and disaster management.
The partnership combines C-DAC’s high-performance computing capabilities with GSI’s geological expertise. Proposed applications include processing large geophysical datasets, high resolution 3D subsurface mapping, predictive modelling for mineral targeting and the conversion of decades of unstructured geological records into a domain specific large language model.
The agreement also aims to accelerate the discovery of critical minerals and rare earth elements while supporting landslide monitoring, early warning systems and studies of glacial lake outburst floods.

Technology integration is moving into the public geoscience system. The strategic value is not artificial intelligence as an isolated label. Peru targets the operating infrastructure of illegal mining in Madre de Dios
What happened
On August 4, Peru’s Joint Command of the Armed Forces reported the results of an air and ground operation carried out on August 2 and 3 in Madre de Dios by the Armed Forces and National Police, in coordination with the environmental prosecutor’s office.
The operation neutralised and destroyed illegal mining equipment and infrastructure valued at S/31,059,820. The reported material included 48 rudimentary camps, 66 rafts, 22 ponds, 66 hoppers, numerous motors, thousands of empty metal drums, six motorcycles and one motorised cargo vehicle.
The intervention took place in the A4, Isla Manuani and Valle Dorado sectors. The government stated that the equipment and infrastructure were destroyed at the sites under the direction of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Illegal mining operates through a physical system: camps, excavation and processing equipment, fuel, transport, logistics and territorial access. Targeting that infrastructure can disrupt operating capacity more directly than isolated seizures. The deeper test, however, is whether repeated interventions weaken the networks that rebuild and finance the system.
Next proof point: whether the affected sites remain inactive, operations continue over time and authorities disrupt the fuel, financing, transport and commercial networks that allow illegal activity to return.

Blackwater begins major EP2 construction with downside price protection in place
What happened
On August 4, Artemis Gold reported that major works construction had commenced on the Expanded Phase 2 growth project at the Blackwater Mine in British Columbia. The first concrete work for the ball mill foundations was completed ahead of schedule.
The company reported that early works, which began in January, were nearing completion; all long lead equipment had been ordered; site clearing and bulk earthworks were advancing ahead of plan; and the 612 person construction camp expansion was nearing completion.
Artemis also reported completion of the approximately 900 cubic metre ball mill raft concrete pour and said EP2 remained on schedule and on budget. The company has purchased put options covering 172,500 ounces of gold at C$5,300 per ounce, representing more than 80% of expected spot sales during the covered period. Artemis says the protection is intended to help preserve its plan to finance construction from operating cash flow if gold prices decline materially.

This is a case of an operating mine converting revenue, procurement and financial risk management into physical expansion. The construction milestone matters because the capital pathway is visible in concrete works, equipment orders and site preparation rather than only in a future development plan.
